In
1968, the May family went camping. Bud felt his family enjoyed
getting out of the city and relaxing in the country so much that he and a
partner bought an old farm to start a campground. Farma was the name
created by combining the partner's names -- Farkos and May became
Farma.
Bud was 48 years old at this time and moved his family from Bethel
Park, PA to Greenville, PA in 1971 to begin working on the
campground. Farma opened to campers in 1969.
In those days, Farma looked a lot different than it does today.
There was an old building that would later be made into a camp store, but first
the current tenants had to be evicted. There were so many mice in
the old corn crib that Jack (whose job it was to catch mice) could stand
still and watch as the mice ran into the traps. There was also a
barn in back of the main house. When not working, the boys would
jump through the door frame of the second floor onto hay piles on the first
floor.
The boys have always had to help with Farma. Wages at the time
were $2.00 per week. Jack began by watering trees. Greg
worked in the bait shop and helped with miniature golf. Dave cleaned
brush and picked rocks, with Matt working the store. At age 11, Matt
also got to drive the new truck, wrecking it twice in two days.
In 1975, the partnership that created Farma split, and the May family
became the sole owners and operators.
Over the years, many improvements have been made at Farma. The
ceramic shop opened in 1971, in the basement of the main house. In
1972, the Rec. Hall and the miniature golf course was built,
along with a bait shop being opened. There was an old wooden
building that was moved to sit beside the miniature golf course that first
housed the bait shop and supplies for the miniature golf course.
From 1972 through 1976, it became a ceramic shop, then it was changed into
a work building until it was torn down in 1995.
The pool has remained much the same as it was when Farma first
opened. There have been problems with it though. In 1975,
muskrats from the pond swam down the pipe that is used to fill the
pool. When they came up for air, they were caught in a bucket and
put back in the pond. In 1983, as it had in the past, a rainstorm
caused the creek to overflow into the pool. The pool was flooded with dirt and
debris. After a clean-up effort, it was ready for swimmers once
again, although for a while it was joked that the flooding of the pool
should be
put on the activity schedule as it seemed to happen so often.
Farma began with "A" area in 1969. "B"
area and the woods were developed in 1970, with "C" and
"D" areas following in 1971. "E" area was
developed around 1972, and an expansion to "F" area followed
around 1976. "G" area was the last development in 1979,
until new sites were developed in 1997.
